Queridas Familias de Chabot,
As the new Chairs of the PTA’s Spanish Committee we are excited to communicate some changes to the Spanish program for next year. We will continue to offer Spanish after school in 2008-2009, but there will be a two-day a week minimum. This will allow your child greater continuity and exposure to the language. Details will arrive in the fall with the other enrichment program materials.
For families interested in giving your child a more immersive Spanish experience, we are also launching a Spanish language lab that will take place before school each day. In the morning, children are able to be alert and open to learning a language. The lab will take place five days a week on campus and we are asking families to commit for the entire year. The stated goal of this program is to have your child speaking and comprehending Spanish. The program will be open to all students grades 1-5 and children will be divided by language level rather than age.

Due to the newness of the program and limited space related to construction next year, we will need to limit the number of students to 24. Enrollment is first come first serve and everyone will register directly with Viva el Español, the organization teaching the classes.
Viva el Español is an East Bay non-profit that has a solid reputation in creating fun, but effective language programs for children. They have a tried and tested curriculum and are already in several other East Bay public schools. We are excited to have them at Chabot next year!
While we understand the morning language lab may not be for everyone, please take some time to consider whether this program may be right for your child and register if interested. You can refer to the attached flyer for additional information and use it as your registration form. Please take the yearlong commitment seriously because if your child wants to drop out after a few months, the program will be too far along to allow another child to take that spot. Once registered, you will receive a follow-up packet requesting more information about your child and their Spanish experience to date.
We are committed to strengthening and expanding all our Spanish programs in the years to come, so that every child at Chabot who wants Spanish can get it! Contact us at iahappoldt@gmail.com or emma.neale@gmail.com with questions.
Gracias y que pasen un verano muy lindo,
