| Kindergarten
Teachers: Jennifer Brackett, Keiko Chew, Nancy Kaminskas, Danny Nagatani
Chabot currently has four kindergarten classes, with all four teachers working closely as a group to plan and reflect on the kindergarten curriculum.
Math is fun: for our 100th day celebration, we counted out 100 of the same thing. We use hands-on manipulatives and mental math.
We compare quantities and make and read bar graphs. The calendar involves math too!
We study our family origins and learn what “ancestors” are and who our ancestors were. We find out how different families celebrate different holidays, and what those holidays mean.
We study African American inventors.
We work on socialization and conflict resolution, starting with interpreting what facial expressions tell you about how someone is feeling.
We have monthly homework assignment sheets, involving exploring the world around us.
Open Court reading: phonemic awareness, rhymes, early grammar, capital letters, short and long vowel sounds, word recognition.
The kids blossom as readers!
We also schedule a number of field trips throughout the year, including excursions to the Smith Family Farm, San Francisco Chinatown and the Junior Center of Art & Science at Lake Merrit.

The whole school loves the kindergarten Halloween and Chinese New Year dragon parades!
We learn and talk about our nation’s heroes, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.
We learn about Native Americans.
We learn manners, picking up after projects, helping each other, eating good healthy snacks, taking care of ourselves, laughing and having kindergarten fun!
